"The Toyota Production System (TPS) is the accumulation of small improvement ideas through acts of leadership. Leadership begins in the Gemba. Gemba Kaizen starts with a good Lean leader. A good Lean leader begins by being a good person, and a good person is honest, trustworthy, and capable." - Ritsuo Shingo
Kaizen is a Japanese term used to describe a continuous improvement approach within an organization. It consists of two words: "kai," meaning "change," and "zen," which translates to "good" or "better." Together, Kaizen refers to the philosophy of making small, consistent improvements in all aspects of a company, from processes and productivity to quality and customer satisfaction.
Gemba refers to the actual, physical place where an organization's primary activities occur, such as a factory, workshop, production department, or any other place where work is done. It is accompanied by Genchi Genbutsu, the practice of going to the place where problems arise (gemba) and observing them directly at their source.
Ritsuo Shingo, son of the renowned "Father of Modern Manufacturing," Shigeo Shingo, has been regarded as the "Nobel Prize of Manufacturing." Ritsuo Shingo was the translator of the first book on the Toyota Production System in English, written by his father. I had the pleasure of training with him in TPS Leadership, Gemba Walks, Kaizen, and Practical Leadership Skills, learning from his wisdom and experience on the gemba (the place where things happen) and Genchi Genbutsu (going and seeing for yourself to understand the reality of a problem or situation). This is the practice of going to the gemba.
Based on my lived experience with Ritsuo Shingo, Primi Cachero follows 3 principles in his personal and professional life:
- Go and observe from the gemba (Genchi Genbutsu)
- Show your back (Senekawo Miseru)
- Never give up!
Using change in personal leadership, as in TPS Leadership, means acting like water: you must be fluid, find your way, and carve your own path. First, you change along with the circumstances; the environment drives the change. Water is powerful, it first moves around an object and then displaces it. A small change can make a big difference.
I help foster practical and human leadership as part of TPS Leadership (Practical Lean Leadership) from the 'gemba' with Kaizen (Continuous Improvement), aligned with the current context, so that leaders in service of the organization emerge, unlocking people’s potential to achieve business results, all within an organizational culture adapted to the present environment and context, showing kindness, compassion, and care for others.
From a Practical Lean Leadership approach, inspired by the spirit of Leadership Sensei Shingo with the motto "Never give up!" and the principle of Senekawo Miseru (Show your back).
Totally relevant today, even though we are speaking of 16th century Japan, are the leadership teachings of Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa, which I strive to follow in my daily life:
- Stability and long-term vision: "Life is like a long journey with a heavy load on your back. Do not rush."
- Diligence: "Those who consider discomfort as natural will never be discontent. When you want more than what you have, remember the days when you were in need."
- Learning from failure: "If you only know what it is to conquer and not what it is to be defeated, that will be harmful to you."
- Patience: "Patience is the foundation for being safe forever. Consider anger as your enemy."
- Leaders take responsibility: "Blame yourself, not others."
- Humility: "It is better to have too little than to have too much."
The path to being a Lean leader
I have had the honor of receiving training from Ritsuo Shingo (Shingo-San) since 2021, learning from his knowledge and experience in Kaizen, Gemba Walk, TPS Leadership, and practical leadership skills, until his passing on April 19, 2023. In his honor and respect, I make available all the experience and knowledge I have assimilated to continue his legacy through the Practical Lean Leadership.
